Welcome – Nau mai haere mai

Just a reminder, that there is no school this Friday 31st May due to it being a Ministry Directed Teachers Only Day for Curriculum and Assessment Development, and no school Monday 3rd June as it is a public holiday celebrating the Kings Birthday.  We hope the weather improves so everyone can enjoy their long weekend!

NO FRIDAY PIE DAY  OR

SCHOOL ASSEMBLY THIS WEEK

WINTER ILLNESSES & ABSENTEES

There are a few winter ills & chills going around the school at the moment.  We would like to ask that if your child is unwell, please keep them at home.  This not only helps with your child’s recovery but also prevents the spread of bugs.

Also, if your child is going to be absent from school, can you please advise the school, either by phone, email or via the skool loop app.  We are required by the Ministry to mark a child absent when they are not at school and note the reason they are away.  Thank you.

CANTERBURY ORDERS HAVE ARRIVED AND ARE AVAILABLE FOR COLLECTION FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE AREA.

What a treat for Rooms 1,2 and 3 who had the author Helen Griffiths come to speak about her new book “Ross the Cat” on Friday. Helen is well known for her  book “ Treasure Beyond Measure” and delighted the children with her exciting presentation about Ross the Cat. Helen donates all the proceeds from her school visits to Taranaki Animal Protection Trust and the SPCA.

FIREWOOD RAFFLE

If anyone has tickets they are unable to sell, can you please return       them to the school office as we have people who can sell them.         Thank you.

GYMASTIC FANTASTIC’S! CONGRATULATIONS to the girls who competed in the Gym Sports last week. Placings were as follows:

Picture Bottom Left:                        Paige 3rd, Jahlaa 2nd, Kisharna 5th

Picture Below:                                  Kelsey 3rd, Mila 1st, Kaylee 5th

Well done girls!

We Had a “Rippa” of a Day!

A huge thank you to the parents who took transport, Gareth Dettling (coach) and Mr Mercer who made yesterdays Rippa tournament such a success for our Year 5 and 6 students, 21 students took part in the central Taranaki Rippa tournament at Stratford Primary. Both teams had to work hard for their excellent results.

Sports Report By Mya Room 5

Yesterday we travelled to Stratford Primary. I played for the Ngaere Ninjas. Mr Mercer was our coach. We won two of our games, we lost two and drew one. Even though it rained a little bit it was fun, we played well as a team. I really want to do it again next year.

Sports Report By Ava Room 5

My team was the Ngaere Nitros. We won our first three games and lost the last two. My Dad was our coach, he was a great coach and all the kids listened really well to him. We learnt from the other teams as we went along and got better and better. The best part of the day was getting some really good tries with the team, when we passed from player to player and got the try. I definitely want to play again next year.

School closed Friday 31 May for Teacher Only Day

From Room 5

Two weeks ago Room 5 made and set out tracking tunnels and chew cards to see what pests we have at our school.

We started by making the bait which was smooth peanut butter. We then grabbed a milk bottle and cut off the bottom and two sides. Next the hot glue guns came out and we stuck the two sides and the bottom of the milk bottle together and put a sponge in the middle. We then had to make the tracking tunnel which is made out of a long piece of wood and a real estate sign (corflute).

We grabbed the stuff we needed and headed outside to set up the tracking tunnel.

The results: We found evidence of mice, rats, native coackroaches, earwigs, possums, slugs and hedgehogs.

Lastly, please do not go looking for our trapping creations because we (Room 5) will be monitoring them each Friday. We want to find pests and remove them from our Ngaere community. We are looking for pests, not people!

Welcome – Nau mai haere mai

A message from the Presiding Member of the board, Dave England

On behalf of our School Board I wish to inform parents and the community that after more than ten years as Ngaere School Principal, Megan England will be resigning, effective 13th  October 2024.
The Board would like to thank Megan for the amazing job she has done leading the school and for the positive impact she has had on our pupils and staff.
We wish Megan all the best with what ever she and her family have planned for the future.
The Board will employ an advisor to help guide us through the process that will ensure we find a principal that upholds our Ngaere School values and continues to take the School forward. This process includes community consultation, and we look forward to receiving feedback on your thoughts regarding what you would like to see in our new Principal.
Regards
Dave E

Greetings to all

Yes, after 11+ years here at Ngaere it is with mixed emotions I have made the decision to retire from my role as Principal. But, I am not going yet!

I will be taking some personal time from 27 May until 26 June to return for the last week of Term 2 and I will be here for Term 3.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my years at Ngaere and have had the privilege of working with a great mix of board members, staff, children and their families. I can look back over my time here and feel very proud of what we have achieved, in terms of improvements made and educational outcomes for your children; a true testament to the unwavering committment and dedication of the staff and board.

I know that the strong foundations we have, not only in teaching and learning but also in the school environment, will ensure our Ngaere children continue to grow and thrive in our supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Thank you to you all for your trust and support throughout my time as Principal. It has been an absolute honour to serve in this capacity and contribute to the success of Ngaere School.

As I said, I am not going yet! There is still work to be done! The board is working to find the next leader of  our school and I will be around to ensure there is a smooth transition and business continues as usual.

Thankyou for the love and support, the memories and the invaluable experiences I have had during my time at Ngaere.

Arohanui

Term 2 Week 2

Wednesday 8 May 2024

Welcome – Nau mai haere mai

It was great to see our children outside this morning with Wednesday fitness.

A huge thank you to everyone who sent along a can for Friday’s mufti day. We had a great selection of ‘people food’ which will be sent along to both the Eltham and Stratford foodbanks, as well as tins of cat food for donating to TAPT.

We had a wide range of community heroes represented too; nurses, vets, farmers, teachers, policemen, mums and dads.

In week 9 we are planning an Art Expo, ‘Painting our Community’ with classes looking at well known portrait artists for inspiration to create their own pieces for display. We will be combining this with our Whanau Day and Puanga celebration. The Art Expo will be open for 3 days (Mon 24- Wed 26 June) and Puanga lunch on Wednesday 26th. More details will come out later in the term.

This ‘Where’s Wally’ character was spotted hiding out the front of the school on our mufti day last week.

Our school is currently involved in a review by the Education Review Office. The process differs from that which we have been involved with in the past. The focus is more on working with the school in an ongoing way over the next three years, rather than as a one off event.  We have a dedicated ERO review officer or evaluation partner who is working in partnership with the school to support us over that time in a collaborative way, with a focus on future improvements for student achievement and outcomes.

There is much coming out of the Minister of Education’s office at the moment and we are taking time to work through the changes that the current Government have already, or are about to implement. We have in place the ‘No cellphone’ policy with very little change and have looked to streamline and ensure we have  ‘one hour of reading, writing and mathematics a day’ across the school. This has required small tweaks to how teachers plan to ensure the links to these learning areas are explicit but we are reasonably confident we are meeting this legislated requirement.

There are also some new guidelines around student absences with a target of 70% of all students regularly attending school. This is something we monitor already and fully appreciate parents notifying the office if their child is absent. We also appreciate children being kept home when unwell. More information can be found on the Ministry of Education website: https://www.education.govt.nz/school/managing-and-supporting-students/managing-student-attendance/

It is a good time to check that your child’s jumper or jacket is named as with the cooler mornings and sunny days many children take off their top layer and sometimes forget to pick it up again. We have a good supply of polar fleeces and jackets in stock.

Friday 17th May: Pink Shirt Mufti Day

We ask each person who chooses to wear mufti to bring $2 which will be forwarded to support the BullyFree NZ cause.

It isn’t uncommon to hear someone say something insensitive or mean to someone else. Although these comments or actions are not okay, bullying has some specific features that make it much more serious and harmful.

  • Bullying is deliberate – harming another person intentionally.

  • Bullying involves a misuse of power in a relationship.

  • Bullying is usually not a one-off – it is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated over time.

  • Bullying involves behaviour that can cause harm it is not a normal part of growing up

There will be no assembly this Friday.

On Friday we have a performance by ‘Strike’, a musical percussion group currently touring our area. The cost of this show will be picked up by the school board.

PTA NEWS

Congratulations and a very warm welcome to Chelsea Kerr who has taken on the role of the Ngaere School PTA Chairperson.

Term 2 Week 1

Wednesday 1 May 2024

Welcome – Nau mai haere mai

Tena Koutou

Welcome back to term 2! I hope you all enjoyed the holiday period and feel refreshed and ready for the next ten weeks of school. It was great to see our tamariki enjoying the sunshine as they played with their friends over the last couple of days. We have started the term with 155 students and expect at least 11 new entrants before the end of the year.

This term marks the beginning of the winter sports and we have teams playing netball on Saturdays, hockey on Mondays & Thursdays and basketball on Fridays. This would not be possible without the support and committment of our parent and family volunteers to coach the teams. Please take the time to thank those who are coaching your child’s team and offer to help as needed.

Some of our year 8 students managed to tick off a few hours of service for their William Pike Challenge during the holiday break by turning up to help Eltham Lions members clear the grass and weeds from around trees behind the Eltham Swimming pool as well as helping make small posies to brighten the cemetary for ANZAC day.  Then on Monday all of Room 7 helped spread the bark on the playground. A great effort, thank you all so much! And a huge thank you to the PTA who funded the new bark!

We have a few things planned this term so please keep checking in with the ‘Calendar Reminders’ in the newsletter. Teachers will also keep you informed using ‘Seesaw’ messaging. If unsure, please ring Karen in the office.

Nga mihi,

Megan

School Captains Harry, Kaylee & Kelsey, along with Tyler attended the ANZAC service at Eltham as ambassadors for our school. Thank you!

Starting

Friday 10th May

This term we have decided to intoduce “Friday Pie-Day” instead of our Hot Food Tuesdays.

Instead of children bringing something to keep warm in the pie warmer we will be offering a normal sized mince pie $5 or smaller bridge pies $1 for lunch each Friday. Orders can be placed for every Friday or can be done weekly but must be placed and paid for by Thursday 9am each week.

Order details out soon!

POOL KEYS

There are still pool keys outstanding!  Please return asap.

The lock will be changing next season, so if you do not return the past years key, you will not be issued a new key next season.

MUFTI DAYS: To kick off our Term 2 focus on ‘Community’ the junior team have planned a mufti day for this Friday, 3 May. Children are to dress as a hero from our community – could be a nurse, a doctor, a teacher, a policeman, a farmer, a mum, a dad or a genuine super hero. No limit to your imagination! We ask that those dressing in mufti bring a can of either cat food or people food for the local foodbank.

We will also take part in BullyFree NZ Pink Shirt Day on Friday 17th May where children are asked to wear something pink and bring a gold coin donation which will be sent on to help support our youth.

PTA Update: Next meeting Monday 6th May in school staffroom 7pm.

We are still in need of a Chair for this awesome group of people who do so much for our school. If you have a bit of time to spare and think you can help please see Megan or Karen at school. There will be plenty of support if you decide to take on this role!

All are welcome to attend the meetings.
