Friday 15th November 2024

Kia ora e te whānau,

It’s been another jam-packed week with our students engaged in some great learning experiences both within school and around the region. From Tabloid Sports in Midhirst for our Year 3/4 students, Outdoor Pursuits for our seniors at TOPEC and tennis lessons for all classes, there’s no shortage of things going on as we head into the “silly season.”

You will have seen that I recently published where teachers will be placed for 2025. This is allowing us to start planning for next year as well as evaluate and review the effectiveness of our curriculum. Class lists should be with you all by Week 8. We are trying really hard to consider factors such as gender, balance, academic spread, peer groupings as well as teacher/student connections. As you’ll appreciate – with only seven classes, this isn’t an easy job, but one we’re committed to getting as close to a best fit for each child as we can. Again – please reach out to me directly should you wish to discuss anything pertaining to your child.

Uniforms: There have been some questions raised regarding the school’s uniforms policy; I’ll raise this at the next Board meeting and come back to you with some clear guidelines and clarity moving forward.

Have a great weekend

See below for Key Dates for next week and information relating to 2025 Strategic Priorities

As we move towards 2025, our two main Strategic Priorities will remain:

  1. Strengthening Capability through “growing & developing a culture of growth and learning by and for all”
  2. Curriculum – ensuring our learners have access to a rich and innovative curriculum that reflects the community in which we live and embeds the schools’ sense of identity, language and culture

In 2025, we are looking to have annual targets around:

  1. Improving literacy outcomes for all learners – with a focus on boys in writing
  2. Strengthening explicit teaching in Mathematics, developing common practices to accelerate progress and achievement
  3. Developing our culturally responsive practices to ensure equitable outcomes for all – with a focus on marginalised learners

Please feel free to use the survey link HERE (or the URL address below) to provide feedback on the proposed focus areas or to offer suggestions for consideration.

Change to Communication Processes from 2025:

As a result of community feedback, from early 2025, the school with shift to using HERO as our main form of communication with parents.

This app will replace eTAP, Skool Loop and Seesaw and allow attendance, asssessment, reporting and parent/teacher contact to be centralised using one platform.

The school website will remain as a static overview of the what the school offers and Facebook will be used for promotional purposes.

This will take a while for us to roll out as we upskill our staff and onboard our students and parent community. Watch this space.

Ngā mihi nui kia koutou katoa,

Another great week has passed and the school continues to have a positive buzz with engaging learning and students getting out and about to explore education outside of the confines of  classroom spaces. See below for key information:

Class Placements: 2025

We’re just in the process of mapping out staffing and class placements for 2025; we should be in a position to communicate this with parents/caregivers by the end of Week 8 (6th December.) A within school transition day to spend time with their 2025 teacher and peers is tentatively scheduled. Further details to come. If you anything you would like us to consider relating to your child/rens need, please flick me an email or book a time to pop in.

Central Schools Athletics – Inglewood

We have approximately 35 students heading off to Inglewood next week  – Wednesday 6th November to represent the school in the Central Schools Athletics. This will be held at the TET Stadium in Inglewood. Students were selected following athletic rotations as part of the Health & PE sessions over the past week. For 2025, this is a trial event with the aim of giving students across the central region opportunities to compete in a facility designed to cater specifically for Athletics. Information for competitors will be with parents early next week. While we would have loved to have run a school/rural schools cluster event prior to this, the timeframes provided have not made this possible; something for us to tidy up for next year.

North Island BMX Champs

Over the long weekend – Parker Gibb, Cooper Beck and Jett Mercer (pictured above) completed in the North Island BMX Champs with Cooper Beck bringing home a 4th place in the North Island final. The boys showed huge heart and supported each other amazingly in a competitive environment. It’s great to see our Ngaere students out there representing us on the “national stage”  – Ka mau te wehi boys! (Awesome!)

As always, my door is always open (digitally or physically) for whānau wishing to come in and connnect.

Have a great weekend

Ngā mihi nui kia koutou katoa,

Wow! It’s hard to believe that we’re through two weeks of the term already – and what a great start to my time as Principal/Tumuaki at Ngaere School. A huge thank you to the students, staff and community for the warm response and community spirit. Over the past fortnight, I’ve really enjoyed wandering through classrooms, connecting with the staff and starting to get to know your wonderful children. I look forward to continuing to build on these relationships as the term progresses.

Over the next couple of weeks, I plan to roll my sleeves up, get into the classrooms and hear from the kids what they love about their school and what ideas or suggestions they have for our staff to consider as we plan for 2025.

Please see below for more information regarding community engagement and consultation.
